Embracing Opportunities Beyond Comfort Zones

When I graduated from Makerere University in 2016, I had a clear vision for my career. I pictured myself working in a big company or corporation in the city, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of urban life.

I told myself that I wouldn't take a job in a remote area, and when I saw job adverts for positions in such places, I didn't even consider applying. My focus was on staying in the city, where I believed the real opportunities were.

However, life has a way of teaching us lessons we never expected. As a fresh graduate, I quickly realized that the luxury of being selective wasn't something I could afford. City jobs were highly competitive, and despite my best efforts, the doors I wanted to open remained firmly closed.

Two years into my career, faced with limited options, I made a decision that would change my life—I accepted a position as a Fellow in the western part of the country, working in primary schools to improve children's learning outcomes.

This role took me over 330 kilometers away from Kampala, into the heart of rural Uganda. Initially, the thought of working so far from the city was daunting, but I soon discovered that this experience was exactly what I needed.

Those two years in the western region not only shaped my career but also transformed how I viewed opportunities. I gained invaluable skills, developed resilience, and learned to appreciate the impact of my work in ways I had never imagined.

Looking back, I realize that if I hadn't taken that opportunity, I might not have experienced the career growth that followed. It was in those remote schools that I found my passion for social entrepreneurship, and many of the opportunities I have today are a direct result of that role in the western part of the country.

For anyone starting out in their career or looking to grow, my advice is simple: sometimes, you have to roll up your sleeves and work in areas or on tasks everyone else is ignoring.

It's not about being there forever, but about gaining valuable experience and making the most of the opportunities available to you.

Don't dismiss a job simply because of its location or because it seems beneath you. Every role has the potential to offer valuable experience and growth.

Instead of focusing on where the job is or how it might appear to others, consider what skills and experiences you can gain from it. Think long-term about how this role can benefit your career trajectory, even if it's not in your preferred location.

Sometimes, the most challenging roles offer the greatest rewards. Approach every job with a positive mindset, and you'll find that your attitude can significantly impact your experience and the opportunities that arise from it.

Remember, that degree or master's shouldn't make you feel like you can't take on certain roles because of how others might perceive you. It's better to take a job that others despise than to remain unemployed, waiting for a dream job that may never come. As the saying goes, "Don't be ashamed of your work or hustle because nobody will feed you if you go broke."

In the end, it's not just about the destination—it's about the journey, the experiences you gather along the way, and the lessons you learn that shape who you become. Embrace the unexpected, and you'll find that the opportunities that come your way might just lead you to places you never imagined.
